Today is St David’s day, a day when the Welsh celebrate being Welsh, and all things Welsh, and general Welshness.
Google made a very nice gesture, by adding a little drawing of Caernarfon Castle to its search page.
Nothing wrong with that, you might think – after all, you don’t get much Welsher than Caernarfon Castle.
Except, Caernarfon Castle was built by the English king, Edward I, to subdue the Welsh.
As one of my Facebook friends said: “I hope they put an Indian takeaway there on St George’s Day.”
Nice try, Google, but… FAIL!

It might have been built to subdue the Welsh but most of the castles we have were, the Welsh didn’t go in for building castles until at least the 11th century and they were nearly always made of wood. It was the Normans who built the majority of our castles, or who at least influenced their building, and while they may have originally been built to control and oppress the Welsh people, guess who’s making money charging English tourists to see them?
(okay, so they charge English and Welsh tourists alike but it’s a nice thought nevertheless, just be greatful google have actually recognised it for once as a day worth celebrating)

Fair point and I agree with you to a degree – they made the effort, and that’s a good thing
But there were Welsh castles built at around the same time, for example Criccieth and Dolwyddelan – with Google’s resources, you’d think they would’ve done a bit of research
